Chapter 18

Jazz headed to their room with Chaz, and told him to feed Dante and give him fresh water before he took a shower. She took another luxurious hot shower, her mind full of questions and revelations. When she was done, she dressed in light blue jeans and a beige cotton blouse, slipped on her ankle-length moccasins, took Dante outside, and waited on Chaz.

When he came out with his hair wet and tangled, it was six o’clock. They followed the crowd into the dining hall, leaving Dante on the porch.

Inside, Malek’s voice blared from the speakers: “Good evening, dudes and dudettes. This is your favorite console captain and computer guru with a public service announcement.”

“I’m their favorite, Malek, you hopeless geek!” a female voice interrupted.

“Be quiet, impudent girl. I’m on important business here. The professor just called and said their arrival is delayed for a couple of hours, so they should be rolling in between eight and nine. Your camp counselors advise you all to just simmer down now, enjoy the in-flight meal and movie, and snuggle up to your sweetie. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.”

“Malek, you doofus—”

The sound was cut off, and laughter filled the hall. Jazz stepped up to the buffet and inhaled slowly, savoring the mouth-watering bouquet wafting off the steaming array.

Dinner was beef pot roast with potatoes, onions, and carrots. Five vegetable dishes and a selection of fruits complemented the main course, along with the makings for a fresh garden salad. Jazz licked her lips when she saw lemon meringue pie and chocolate cake laid out for dessert. She filled her plate, sat down beside Roberta and Marco, and dug in.

Conversation was cheerful, mostly about the professor coming back or the afternoon’s game. Jazz withheld her questions and enjoyed the meal. She couldn’t remember the last time she and Chaz had eaten so well and with such regularity.

She wanted to spend some quality time with Chaz and hear about his day. She snagged his arm on the way outside after they finished dinner and dessert. He looked longingly at Amanda as she walked away with Mara and the other children.

Jazz briefly wondered if Amanda’s special talent was making nine-year-old boys develop hopeless crushes on her.

They called Dante, walked over to one of several wooden benches spaced around the perimeter of the buildings, and sat. Chaz picked up a stick, tossed it toward the surrounding trees, and Dante leaped after it.

“So what do you think, Binky?”

Chaz grunted and rested a hand on his belly. “I really like it here, Mother. A lot.” He squinted up at her. “I really think we should stay here.”

She chuckled. His wide-eyed innocence was endearing, and she would wrestle lions, tigers, and bears to help him keep it. So far, he’d handled the shock and stress of their situation much better than she’d expected. She agreed about staying, but she didn’t let on.

“Hmmm.”

“What?” He grabbed the stick from Dante and threw it again. “Mother, I don’t think you understand how important it is that we stay here.
